چکیده

This paper proposes a definition of Schelling’s model of segregation using generalized derangements. Many of urban or territorial modellings are based on decentralized approaches where rule-based systems have to be integrated inside a whole interaction system to describe complex phenomena. The goal of these decentralized modellings is to deal with emergent computing able to detect dynamically emergent organizations in an unsupervized way, thanks to complex systems theory. The convergence of these modern computings is generally hard to study because of the use of asynchronised processes dealing with a number of autonomous entities which are acting and interacting, in non linear way, during the whole simulation. Our approach is to define a non sequential-dependant algorithm, thanks to generalized derangements, and so to use this efficient tool to study some properties on the evolutive process.

Schelling's Bounded Neighbourhood Model : a systematic investigation

This thesis explores the role of modelling and computational simulation, in relation to social systems, with specific focus on Schelling’s Bounded Neighbourhood Model. It discusses the role of computational modelling and some techniques that can be used in the Social sciences. Simulation of social interaction consistently creates debate in the Social sciences. However, most models are dismissed...

Population density and diversity: an update to Schelling’s model

Motivated by recent increases in population density and changes in urban development patterns, I give an update to Schelling’s landmark spatial segregation model. Inspired by the rapid construction of high-rise condominiums and apartments, I show a correlation between population density and racial diversity in San Diego neighborhoods. Using this as a basis, I give a modified high-density versio...

A unified framework for Schelling's model of segregation

Schelling’s model of segregation is one of the first and most influential models in the field of social simulation. There are many variations of the model which have been proposed and simulated over the last forty years, though the present state of the literature on the subject is somewhat fragmented and lacking comprehensive analytical treatments. In this article a unified mathematical framewo...

Emergence of representations from a multi-agent implementation of Schelling’s model

In this paper we use the concept of emergent representations issue from decomposition along two axes: collective/individual and internal/external. In a collective/internal composition, emergent representations are seen as internal, stable and non-reactive complex adaptive systems. Based on natural optimization algorithms, like Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO),...

Tipping and Residential Segregation: A Unified Schelling Model

This paper presents a Schelling-type checkerboard model of residential segregation formulated as a spatial game. It shows that although every agent prefers to live in a mixed-race neighborhood, complete segregation is observed almost all of the time. A concept of tipping is rigorously defined, which is crucial for understanding the dynamics of segregation. Complete segregation emerges and persi...
